It is sad when we consider that despite all of the advancements made in human knowledge over the recent centuries, we still find ourselves living in a dark and chaotic world full of violence; where most of our experiences and understanding of morality, of good and evil… remain marred in the foggy swamps of manipulation, repression and control; where the leaves of a bloody tree distract all from it’s countless entangling roots.

Where murder is both condemned and praised.

Where theft is both bad and good.

Where slavery is freedom, war is peace and ignorance is strength.

Lost Liberty Café is a site dedicated to freeing humanity from the stranglehold of violence, coercion and enslavement. It is our hope that we can help to accomplish this lofty goal through many avenues, reaching out to educate people on philosophy and basic critical thinking skills as well as spreading the kinds of ideas we have derived from these skills through writing, art, poetry, podcasts, videos and music.

These skills involve a rigorous application of reasoning from first principles and comparing the ideas in our heads to empirical evidence in the real world. This methodology for determining truth from falsehood, otherwise known as the scientific method, is a fundamental pillar of philosophy. Philosophy not only helps us in learning and acquiring new knowledge but answers that burning question:

“How do we know what we know?”

Philosophy is a very powerful, epistemological tool. It can be used to help us to slice through the obscuring, illusory surface of distracting myths that hide the deeply embedded roots of violence in the world today.  These are not roots hidden underground in some exotic South American cave unknown to the world, where only one particular man with a hat, bullwhip and sarcastic wit can reach.   No, these roots are hidden in plain sight.  We all see them clearly but, sadly, most people choose to close their eyes, turn away and ignore or repress this knowledge.

The truth is, we all know everything all the time, true knowledge is not learning but admitting, and by utilizing the wisdom gained through self-knowledge – and a thorough understanding of modern day psychology – we can dive deep into the waters of the unconscious and into an archeological dig through the history of our own lives in order to find out where it all went wrong in the world and more importantly, why.

My mission for this site and my purpose in life is to awaken people to a new understanding of themselves and the world.  Through philosophy we can begin to see the forest for the trees, the bigger picture we are blinded to by the lies, superstition and petty minutiae that distract us all from the truth we have all forbidden ourselves to see.

In uncovering the truth we can find our way to happiness, we can improve our relationships with ourselves and others.  We raise the standard of what we think of as intimacy because we learn that we can only meet in reality.  We can only connect by being honest and living virtuously.

You might ask, “but how do we live virtuously?” or exclaim that “Nobody knows what goodness is.”  This frustration is understandable, ours is a world still plunged in a dark age where an ethical pandemic keeps us from moving forward, away from the brutal superstitions of the past and into the rational and voluntary society we all want to live in.

In a world without a map of rational and objective, secular ethics we cannot possibly know how to live and function in such a way that we can achieve long term happiness.  Fortunately, we have a way of creating this map.  It is through philosophy that we can develop a methodology for validating or invalidating ethical theories; and it is through psychology and acknowledging our histories that we can break free of our Pavlovian resistance to accepting what we find to be objectively good and evil.

Through this site, we can turn the wheel that changes the course of this Titanic ship towards a goal of creating that better world. We hope to share the kind of information and understanding you will need to help you find your way out of the prison you are in.  Like the alcoholic, who must admit to having a problem in order to move forward, we must be honest with ourselves in order to become free.  In being honest with ourselves we can achieve the first virtue of being honest with others.   In having that courage to take that vulnerable first step out of the “invisible” matrix you are in, you also take the first step towards freeing the world.

I hope you enjoy this site, the articles and podcasts and I wish you the best in your endeavors,

Nathan McKaskle
