This is Your Democracy on Anarchy

The Miami Herald unsurprisingly reports that senators voting against the recent tobacco regulation bill are some of the top recipients of campaign donations from major tobacco companies for the past several elections. The Herald article goes on to describe the activities in detail, citing sources linked for easy public access.

This could be considered a rare instance of government corruption wherein politicians take bribes in the form of campaign contributions in return for political favors, just the sort of illegal action heavily sought by media reporters hungry for a good scandal.

One could also consider this to be a shame on big “seedy” corporations for bribing said politicians, corrupting the democratic system and thus call for tougher regulation on how donations can be made.

I, however, would consider it a rather large and not insignificant piece of evidence that:

  1. Democracy is just a suggestion box for slaves.
  2. The state is nothing more than a criminal organization of fraudulent con-men who in this particular case put the shakedown on tobacco companies for large bribes.
  3. Market Anarchy works.

To quote fellow Lost Liberty Café contributor, Greg Gauthier:

I recall a study done by Citizens for Better Government (a lobby group itself), that showed the flow of money from specific lobbies, to specific candidates over time, as their positions shifted. It was both amusing and informative.

Predictably, as a specific congressman would make more and more strident statements about “cracking down on crime”, his funding from reformist lobbies would diminish, while his funding from gun and prison lobbies would increase. Likewise with with congressmen who shift from “green” to “growth” and back again, and from “small business” to “big business” and back again.

The basic implication was that congressmen and lobbyists are both shopping for the best deal they can get.

And, ironically, it just proves the power of the free market.

Isn’t it marvelous just how well anarchic principles work right under our very nose? Should a politician fail to deliver on his goods to high paying donors… Well, his next election year may turn out to be his last. CEOs will continue to search on the market for better, more reliable politicians willing to accept the bribes they require to keep their fellow thugs busy and distracted, shaking down other profitable sources. All this despite a terrible opposition of media hounds, sniffing continuously for the next whiff of corruption.

It’s not just that Market Anarchy will work. It’s that Market Anarchy is already working.
