This all leads to a broader picture. Most governments maintain power by making you believe in the ‘constitutive other’. To put it in simpler terms, if you believe you have some sort of unseen enemy, it makes you feel like you need help and tough, knowledgeable leadership to protect you. What Social media (twitter in specific) is showing us is that no matter where you are or who you are, the enemy is not the people of other countries, but the governments of other countries.
People are finding that no matter where you are, we all have the same basic human values and we want to live in peace together. “Leadership” keeps getting in the way.
I have to say that although this video suggests a new found freedom of speech through social networking, it is extremely naive to make the assumption that Twitter is immune from government interjection.
In the case of Iran, there are already sanctions in place controlling what the Iranian public access on the internet, and I am sure that if any government wanted to close the doors to the outside world it could quite easily take the communication infrastructure away from it’s people.
Although this kind of action would be less likely to occur in the West, there is still absolutely nothing stopping a government from discrediting any information on the site, by flooding it with contradictory or false information. Spammers and internet marketers already use or abuse the platform for their own ends, and there is no reason a government could not adopt similar tactics to do the same.
All forms of media can still be corrupted to stress a desired point of view, but what has changed is that we have a lot more information available to us now, through television, the internet and traditional press, people just need to read between the lines. The truth is born of common sense, rationale and intelligence.
If you possess these things you will already know not to believe everything your told, and know that ultimately the vast majority of people want the same things.
It’s an unfortunate trait of human nature that those who shout the loudest about a single agenda or issue force their ‘ideal’ on the masses and that the greater good is very often ignored.
People can spend all day saying what they like on Twitter but until people open their minds to the potential of socio-centric reform in real terms it really doesn’t mean a thing it’s just words
